Presidents report
Hey everyone and welcome to Geology. My name is Maja Jonsson and I am the present for 1999.
This year we have a new name for the old GGS (Geology Geophysics society). It is now that Geology society, GEOS.
This newsletter is also knew. You can be informed about what's happening in Geology by picking up one of these things in the Geology common room on the ground floor every month or so. You can find out about what functions are on, and when, and any other gossip and news that we can find.
Read on for all the information you could possibly want about the new, improved Geology society, GEOS.
Membership details
If you need reasons to join geos there are plenty. We'll have lots of social gatherings and we'll organise a camping weekend for both semesters (with supply food and drinks). There is going to be eight years Woodside and a monthly newsletter. And as well as having a GEOS T-shirt, this year we'll have a GEOS stubby holder and maybe even beanies (this will sound better in winter).
The Geology society is guild affiliated, which means that we get money from them for having members who are also guild members. If you are a guild member you can get $5 off GEOS membership by using the clubs vouchers they give you. GEOS membership is $25. This gives you free beer and munchies (and softdrinks) at all our functions and discounts on quality field equipment that the first years will need to buy. We recommend that he join the guild, because it is definitely worth the money for all the perks you get through the entire year, and because we get more money to spend for you to have fun!
On O-day there will be a GEOS stand at the entrance to the guild courtyard facing the psychology building. Anyone who joined GEOS on the day will get a free stubby holder and a beer to put in it as well. Hope to see you there.
The GEOS Committee
All the GEOS committee members were elected last year except for first-year representative who we will find this year. We will come to one of the Geology 101 lectures in the first week and find out who is interested. Below is a list of the committee members of GEOS.
President - Maja Jonsson
Vice-President - Jennifer Hawkins
Treasurer - Kirsty Culver
Secretary - Katherine Varvell
Activities Officer - James Botterill
2nd year representative - Carey Johnston
Unconformable Editor - Shane Trott
Honours representative - Serge Hayon
Delegates - Adam Drescher & Jody Hilson
GEOS Website
There will be a GEOS website this year, but it is not up and running yet. We'll tell you the address when we know what it is! The page will contain up-to-date information about what's going on in the Geology Society and will probably also have links to other geology stuff.
Friday Afternoon Sessions
I have worked out the timetables for first year, second and third years and it turns out that the best time for drinking sessions are on Friday afternoons, as it always happened. So every fortnight (hopefully), we will have beers and a sausage sizzle or pizza and play some cricket or kick a footy on a Friday at the lakes or the cricket oval.
GEOS Weekend Away
This year we are going to organise a weekend away for the third or fourth weekend in March. GEOS will supply food and beer and organises stuff for a small amount of money
and we'll all have heaps of fun. We would leave on a Friday afternoon and get back on a Sunday.
Geotourism Slide Shows
In the past we have asked our lecturers to give slide shows with commentaries of their exploits overseas, while we all drink beer and eat munchies. They're always good and it's a great opportunity for first years to get to know the staff and students in geology. We should be having our first one for the year in the first week back. Lookout for posters.
